The Myth of the Eternal Return: Matador Playlist 7/18/24

Well, what can I tell you, Gentle Reader(s)? I guess it was bound to happen, sooner or later. Deny it though I tried, the swan song of sweat, beer and rock and roll emanating from beneath Galisteo Street has lured me back. For better or worse, DJ Inky lives once again.

The drama betwixt and between the sacred and the profane is a central conceit of the work of the Romanian historian, philosopher and writer Mercia Eliade (1907-1986), and so, in its own way, is my DJ gig at Ye Olde Matador Lounge. Every time I descend those grimy steps into the Hades-like gloom I am faced anew with the challenge of striving for some modicum of transcendence whilst in the service of commerce. Ridiculous, I know, but that’s pretty much how I look at it. I’m always searching for that little crevice, that crack in the booze and the boisterousness, where I can try to insert something that elevates the profane to the realm of the sacred. I’m not sure what Eliade might have thought of my 13-minute mashup of three mixes of Bjork’s Army of Me, but that was kind of what I was aiming for. No one really seemed to take notice this time around, but I’ll keep trying, regardless.

So, here for your delectation—for the first time since March 5, 2020—is an actual DJ Inky Matador playlist. I know I had started posting them on YouTube rather than listing the individual links here, but I can’t recall exactly how that process worked. So, for now, here’s the list and I will link it to the actual playlist on YouTube as soon as I remember how the hell that works.

Thank you for your kind attention, whoever you are, and remember—never give gum to a robot and keep those cards and letters coming in!

P.S. – Thank you Cesar, thank you Katya, thank you Franceesco wherever you are!!
