27 Oct Matador Playlist(s) 8/18/16 + 8/25/16 + 9/22/16 + 9/29/16
Gentle Reader(s), I have returned. No, I have not been languishing at Death’s door (front or back), nor have I been abducted by Aliens, illegal or otherwise, or kidnapped by Bigfoot, Mr. or Mrs.. Nor have I fallen into an Arctic crevasse, Ant- or otherwise, or been afflicted by amnesia, appealing though that may, at times, seem. What can I say other than I just felt that I needed a break from pumping out Ye Olde Matador Playliste(s). The Inky travel has been coming fast and furious—nothing new there (the image above is from Your Humble Narrator’s most recent trip to the Heartland to visit Inky Mum)—but throughout late summer YHN was suffering mightily from severe Election Season Fatigue. I was obsessing over the horror of Dumb Drumpf advancing in the polls while trying to maintain my increasingly fraying faith in the essential Common Sense and Decency of the American Body Politic. Now that the Drumpf seems to have offended mainstream American sensibilities sufficiently to start tanking I might be able to muster fortitude sufficient to the task of applying finger to keyboard and reestablishing the connection betwixt and between mind and matter.
Dark though the Times may seem, Gentle Reader(s), Faith we must have, or else all is indeed lost. Secretary Hills has had a few stumbles of late, literal and figurative, but her showing in all three debates (I hesitate to use the word ‘presidential’ in regard to anything that involves the Drumpf) was strong and Dumb Drumpf continues to demonstrate that his hypocrisy, misogyny and cynicism know no bounds. The mind-boggling absurdity of his ‘Birther’ end-game charade was truly staggering to behold but the dawning of nearly every day exposes another new low. His assertion that the election will be ‘rigged’ against him and that he reserves the right to dispute the result if it is not in his favor is, as Hillary Clinton accurately described it, horrifying. Even the Orange Menace’s own running mate and family members have not been able to bring themselves to stand behind that assertion. I’m not sure if any one of these shameful spectacles has any equivalent in the history of American politics. I expect (and hope) that future political scientists and historians will study the Drumpf campaign and marvel over the depths of his boundless mendacity and the blind ignorance and hatred that his hard core constituency continues to maintain. ‘Horrified’ scarcely manages to express my response to this waste of flesh. He is a foul cancer on our country.
The bottom line, and I do mean bottom, seems to come down to this: The election will largely hinge on those voters who, bafflingly, still consider themselves to be ‘undecided’ at this very late stage of the game. In the past few weeks, particularly since the release of the Billy Bush/Dumb Drumpf tapes, the groundswell of repulsion for the Republican nominee seems to have gained momentum and the ranks of the undecided may finally be dwindling. The upshot of the Bush/Drumpf recordings (and additional tape from the Howard Stern show) presents another conundrum for Drumpf. On the one hand he describes, definitively and undeniably in his own voice and own words, that he regularly inflicts unwanted physical attentions on women and considers it to be his right to do so. In the Stern recording he gleefully recalls walking, unannounced, into the dressing rooms of the Miss USA pageant while contestants were changing clothes. Over a dozen women who experienced both varieties of demeaning assault have since come forward with their accounts of the events. Dismissing his words as harmless ‘locker room banter,’ the Orange Menace has denied ever having done any of the things he describes and has denounced the women who verify his recollections of his own behavior as political shills and slanderers. Therefore, by his own reckoning, Dumb Drumpf is, at best, a liar and a braggart.
Regardless, the Drumpf faithful continue to proclaim their allegiance. Either they buy the line that the evidence of sexually predatory behavior mounting up against their appointed savior is the product of a liberal media conspiracy (even though Drumpf has never denied that the recordings are legit) or they figure that boys will be boys and anything is better than Crooked Hillary. Some evangelical pastors are advising their flocks to ignore the Drumpf’s many Christian shortcomings and focus on the necessity of stacking the Supreme Court with hard-line conservatives who would, eventually, overturn Roe vs. Wade. As much as the Rethuglican conservative fringe despises President Obama (who they can’t seem to stop campaigning against even though he’s 95% of the way out the White House door), they despise the Clintons more. And if there’s anyone they hate more than Bill Clinton, it’s Hillary. The special vitriol reserved for her is truly extraordinary in its unhinged noxiousness, crossing the line from suspicion and fear into delusion and hysteria. The latest ominous grumblings suggest that some Drumpfians, sensing imminent defeat, are proclaiming the election to have already been stolen from them and are planning to take to the streets in defiant protest, peaceful or otherwise, to effect the immediate removal of Secretary Hills ‘by any means necessary.’ It’s almost too horrible to fully comprehend, but the larger implication is that, as I have posited previously, the Orange Menace is not the cause, but the symptom. Drumpf may go down in flames on November 8th but the fires he has helped to stoke will continue to burn.
Well, that’s about all I can manage at the moment. The debates are over, the election is less than two weeks away, and I’ve got other matters on my plate. First and foremost, the Cubs of Chicago are in their first World Series in 71 years and they’ve tied the series up with the Indians of Cleveland, one game apiece, before heading home to Wrigley Field on Friday night. In the meantime I shall endeavor to put all matters Orange and Drumpfy out of my beleaguered noggin for a few more days to root for the Northsiders. GO CUBS!!!!
Oh, and right—Matador playlists. Here’s a sampling of what I’ve cobbled together over the past two months—only about half of the actual number. Try to channel your disappointment in constructive directions.
