07 Jun Matador Playlists 5/29/25 & 6/5/25
At long last, Your Humble Narrator has returned to his crepuscular little corner in Ye Olde Matador Bar & Lounge to spin the toons for the multitudes once again. It was a fairly long hiatus this time around—almost two months—but I figure that my time was well spent as the previous posting on this page will attest. One event that took place while I was out of the Santa Fe pocket was the Matador anniversary. The Little Bar That Could first opened its door (there’s only one) on May 5, 2007, and it has been taking names and kicking butt ever since. There was that whole unfortunate pandemic thing back in 2020, but with that one exception the Mat has been open every day of every week of every month for the past 18 years. That is pretty incredible. A wide range of watering holes—most of them within a block or three of the corner of Galisteo and West San Francisco Streets—have come and gone during that period of time, but the Matador abides and, somewhat improbably, so does DJ Inky. The promo image at the top of the page dates back 16 years.
Besides Francisco and Cesar, YHN is the only remnant of the original Matador crew still darkening the doorway—and that includes patrons as well as employees. I held forth on this topic back at the beginning of the year (see my post of 1/5/25), but I thought it worthy of a further mention. So, Happy 18th Birthday Matador—you are now an ostensible institutional adult and old enough to vote, though I don’t expect you’ll ever really grow up. I wouldn’t consider it an exaggeration to say, Gentle Reader(s), that we live in strange and precarious times, but I can’t but help to look forward to the eventuality of the Mat’s 20th anniversary in 2027. I have no notion of what manner of celebrations might be in order to observe the blessed occasion and I’m not holding out much hope that the Mayor will issue any proclamations or present us with the key to the city. There’s plenty of time to figure out something special but we’ve got to actually get there first. Fingers crossed!
In the meantime, I offer up not just one but TWO Matador playlists for your delectation and delight. Is this your lucky day or what?? Here is the YouTube link for this week’s presentation, and here’s the one for last week. The particulars of both sessions are listed below, as always. Enjoy!
