Matador Playlists 3/10/16 & 3/17/16

Greetings, Gentle Reader(s) and welcome to yet another indubitable double dose of that matchless melange of estimable epistemologically erudite euterpian offerings, Matador Playlist. Ask for it by name, accept no substitute. I need not tell you that there is much malice afoot in the land these days, both near and afar. I have opined in some depth regarding the ongoing offensiveness of the current political season on these storied shores, but the dreary drivel being spouted this side of the pond pales in comparison to the latest outbreaks of fundamentalist horror on the other. Words are woefully inadequate at times such as these, but I do have one itemable update for you: Your Humble Narrator will soon be voyaging to the very site of the recent outrages. A trip to the Low Countries is forthcoming in one week’s time and I will do my best to report back with news and images from Amsterdam, Brussels, Bruges, and other locales encountered during my two week journey. A new camera (pictured above) has been added to the arsenal, all the better to capture imagery from this rare foray. I am very enthused indeed about my lovely new Olympus PEN-F, a significant step up from the sturdy E-P2 that has been my primary device for the last several years. Stay tuned.

IMG_4344This week’s installment is inclusive of the Matador’s St. Paddy’s Day celebration, which was quite celebratory indeed. A lovely time was had by one and all and the Matador leprechauns were out in force, well decked out in the spirit of the Wearin’ o the Green. St. Paddy’s Day across most of mid-America is generally just another beer-bash but the holiday’s namesake is a genuine and compelling historical entity. Here are some nuggets of information about his life and times:

• St. Paddy was a Brit! He was kidnapped from across the Irish Sea by Irish pirates (now that sounds like a fun posse!) at about the age of 16 and was taken to the Emerald Isle as a slave. He escaped from his captors after several years and was able to sail home to England, eventually returning to Ireland as a cleric.

• The significant dates of St. Paddy’s life (which is thought to span the latter half of the 5th century) are generally vague but March 17th became accepted as the date of his death and is now celebrated as his feast day.

• It has been posited that there were, in fact, two individuals to whom the works of St. Patrick are credited: St. Patrick himself and Palladius, sent by Pope Celestine I to be the first bishop to the Irish. Palladius’s mission was allegedly to forestall exiled Pelagianists from establishing a foothold for their heresy in Ireland. I read that on the side of a can of Guinness.

• St. Paddy determined to establish his ministry in Ireland after receiving a vision in which a man named Victoricus gave him a letter titled ‘The Voice of the Irish.’ I think that might also be the title of a later Sinead O’Connor album.

• St. Patrick did not have an easy time of it, facing opposition from assorted locals including Druids who described him as ‘crazed in the head.’ St. P was, at various points, put on trial, robbed, bound in chains, knocked about and generally treated in a less-than-saintly fashion by some of the more rambunctious of his Irish constituency.

• The association of St. Paddy, his Day, and the Irish in general with the image of the shamrock is attributed to—no, not Lucky Charms—but St. Paddy’s utilization of the shamrock as visual aid with which to teach the concept of the Holy Trinity to his flock.

• Although St. Paddy is typically credited with banishing all snakes from Ireland (they supposedly harshed his buzz whilst engaged in a 40-day hilltop fast), the fossil record indicates that there weren’t any snakes in Ireland anyways. As Donald Trump/Drumpf’s family seems to have its roots in Germany this sounds plausible.

• St. Paddy is said to have made the acquaintance of two ancient Fianna warriors, Cáilte mac Rónáin and Oisin, whom he attempted to convert to Christianity. His efforts were apparently unsuccessful, as Cáilte and Oisin were fairly well pleased with their traditional life of feasting, smiting and wenching. Evidence would seem to indicate that present-day celebrants of St. Paddy’s Day generally tend to follow suit.

• The reputed location of St. Patrick’s remains are not in the cathedral in New York that bears his name, but rather beneath a large rock in the town of Downpatrick, south of Belfast. Not to be confused with the Blarney Stone, located outside of Cork.

Erin Go Bragh! Enjoy!
