Matador Playlist 8/8/24

Ahh, yes—those cool, rainy summer evenings in Santa Fe! They really are the best. The clouds start to build up in the mid to late afternoon and by five or six the rain showers flirting around the edge of the city—off to the west towards the Jemez mountains or just outside of town in the Sangre de Cristo foothills—get their gumption up and bust a move on the City Indifferent. The tourists wrap themselves in their plastic ponchos and scamper for the portal at the Palace of the Governors or the shops and boutiques surrounding the Plaza. The temperature begins to drop, often by 20 or 30 degrees. The showers usually clear out in a hour or so and, with a bit of luck, my old amigo Jamie Lenfesty and the good folks from Lensic 360 are able to present the summer concert series at the Plaza bandstand or the Railyard without atmospheric impediment.

A major deluge last night seemed to have, sadly, put the kibosh on Jamie’s much-anticipated Digable Planets gig at the Railyard. I rode the Inkcycle over there around 6:00 and waited out the downpour until close to 8:00. It would seem to have been a non-starter but, back at home shortly before ten PM, I detected a melodic thump in the distance. Stepping outside to listen for a moment it seemed that the DP’s had indeed made it to the stage after all. I considered leaping in the Inkmobile to try and make a mad last-minute dash to try and catch a bit of the show, but twas not to be. Bummer, dude.

Being the dank, low-ceilinged subterranean hidey hole that it is, the Matador reliably tends towards the stuffy, but on rain-cooled mid-evenings the temperature outside has typically dropped to the mid or low 70s and the door is opened to allow in some blessedly fresh air. By the time I emerge from beneath Galisteo Street around 2:30 AM it is genuinely chilly for the brief drive home. After a four and a half year hiatus from the DJ Inky routine, it all feels comfortingly familiar. Come freezing January I know I’ll be singing a different song, but I’m content to enjoy it while I can.

An energetic evening this Thursday. A fairly mellow beginning that built to a crowded finale with the reggaeton crowd in attendance along with a few hipsters (aging hipsters, if I’m being honest—as it takes one to know one) making requests for the likes of the Velvet Underground and David Bowie, which I was more than happy to oblige.

Kudos once again to bartender extraordinaire Katya, doorman Ian and the rest of the crew, and to Cesar and Franceesco (wherever you are). DJ Inky will be on hiatus for a couple of weeks to visit InkMom in America’s Dairyland, but I shall return on August 29th.
