Matador Playlist 3/23/17

Thank you for joining me once again, Gentle Reader(s), for another episode of Ye Olde Matador Playlist. It has been a very quiet winter and early spring indeed on Galisteo Street but we—DJ Inky, bartender Gus and doorman extraordinaire Lawrence—soldier on regardless. This last Thursday was on its way to being no exception to that trend and by the time 10 PM rolled around there were maybe a dozen people in the bar, give or take. One of those in attendance was T.C., whose birthday had apparently been the previous day. T.C. was still in a celebratory frame of mind and he requested some ’80s/’90s vintage music of the danceable variety. I was happy to comply.

There was a couple sitting at the bar not far from the DJ Inky nook and the female portion of the couple introduced themselves to Gus by way of saying that her husband was, or had been, the drummer for the notable Austin anarcho-punk wack jobs the Butthole Surfers (meaning he was either King Coffey or Scott Matthews—I have no idea). She started requesting Reagan-era dance music too and faster than you can say ‘PBR, please Gus,’ a full-blown Matador dance floor throwdown was underway. T.C., who is not an individual of small stature, was hurling himself about the room with admirable gusto and Mrs. Butthole Surfer and a couple of other folks were doing their best to keep up. T.C. was additionally expressing his exuberance by screaming YAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! YAAAAAAAAAAAH!! at the top of his lungs. Gus had Apocalypse Now-Redux playing on the big screen and T.C., apparently inspired by this epic cinematic offering, started yelling YAAAAAAAAAAH!! KILL EM ALL!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! It was fairly chilly out this particular evening and Mrs. B. Surfer was wearing a white cashmere sweater underneath her coat. Once she got sufficiently warmed up she yanked this off and continued on cutting the nonexistent rug in her brassiere. T.C. howled—YAAAAAAAAAAAH!!—Mrs. Surfer flailed and shimmied, Gus and Lawrence and Your Humble Narrator watched with all due amusement. It was turning out to be an interesting evening after all.

After an extended application of hisself to these heroic exertions T.C. sat back down at the bar to cool off with a refreshing beverage, Mrs. B. Surfer pulled her sweater back on, and I began to downshift the vibe from dance madness mode. T.C. continued to howl YAAAAAAAAAAAH!! at considerable volume while seated at the bar but after two hours this particular jape had finally begun to lose its charm. Gus suggested that T.C. give it a break, Mr. and Mrs. B. Surfer melted away into the night and once again it was another quiet Thursday night at the Matador. It was interesting while it lasted and I was impressed by T.C.’s ability to scream constantly for two hours without losing his voice. I almost always wake up hoarse the morning after my Matador gig, just from trying to chat with folks over the music.

So there you have it, Gentle Reader(s)—another memorable evening at Ye Olde Matador Lounge, where the good times never stop. Come down and join us sometime and, yes—you can dance, you can scream (for a while, anyway), and you can take your top off too. That’s just how we roll.
