01 Sep Matador Playlist 8/29/24
It was back to the swampy confines of Ye Olde Matador Lounge on Thursday after a two-week hiatus for a journey up to the Great White North. The occasion for travel was to observe Ink Mum’s birthday—96, if you can believe it!—and to savor some beach/forest/countryside time in America’s Dairyland. A side excursion was made to see a Brewers/Dodgers game in Milwaukee on the 15th. The Ohtani effect was fully evident and a torrential deluge added to the mayhem outside of the former Miller Park. The stadium was packed to the rafters beneath the thankfully retracted retractable roof, but the 3/4 Billion Dollar Man didn’t unleash any fireworks on this day. The Dodgers ended up losing, 6-4, much to the joy of the Brew Crew faithful, splitting a four-game series. I listened to the first two innings on the radio from my rental car as I waited in an endless queue to be directed to a soggy parking spot. I had paid $200 for my third row seat just behind the home on-deck circle, so I figure the Brewers organization owes me about $50. I’ll accept a voucher for a future game, thank you very much.
I also set aside a day for a drive up to Door County via the bucolic back roads to see the sights, take some photos, and enjoy lunch at Al Johnson’s iconic goat-topped restaurant in Sister Bay. It could scarcely have been a more perfect day and Sister Bay was as idyllic as one might hope. After enjoying some of Al Johnson’s famous Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jam I sat on a bench in the marina and savored the sunshine, the mild temps and the gently lapping waters of Green Bay. Blissful is what it was, if but for a lack of some sympathetic company (and you know who you are).
I mentioned that it was ‘swampy’ at the Matador on Thursday—this resulting from the floor drains seeing fit to start working in reverse. Frequent interventions with mop & bucket from stalwart doormen Ian and Don were required throughout the evening. It might have had something to do with all the rain we’ve been getting lately, or (more likely) with the ongoing chaos at the Peters Corp. and its subsidiary Southwest Assets Management—SWAM being the entity what oversees the Plaza Mercado building, in which basement level resides Ye Olde Matador. Regardless of the excessive moisture, we had a solid night, all told.
So, here you have it, Gentle Reader(s), another DJ Inky set for the record books, complete with a nod to the forthcoming Oasis reunion, a reunion singalong of A New England with brother Cubbie, and a special nod to Brother Henry whose latest tome, Stay Fanatic!!! Lessons in Possession and Confessions of Obsession, Vol. 4, had just arrived in the mail.
We shall convene once again on the 5th. Until then…
